Competition for Social Housing Project in San Juan de Alicante.
The project includes the construction of a building of 40 social homes with retail on the ground floor. It includes a car park for a total of 45 parking spaces and community facilities.
We propose a dense terraced building with common courtyards and private terraces for residents in order to conserve Mediterranean habits of life on the outside.
The building is organized around three courtyards that serve both pedestrian access to the four cores of stairs as well as “interior squares”, spaces for meeting and sharing skills, knowledge and experiences between young and old. Those squares are protected from the weather, free of traffic, noise and air pollution.
In addition to the patios , 45% of the homes have private terraces that relate to the public courtyards and establish visual contact between the inhabitants. This way the living rooms extends to the outside. Additionally a communal terrace is planned for each core.
These terraces represent a big plus for the project, an additional element that provides greater spatial richness. According to regulations these spaces do not substract from building allowance.
The density of the block is reduced towards the east, while increasing towards the public facades in the southwest and northwest, in order to show a consistent urban image to the street. The philosophy of the proposal is the creation of a vibrant and attractive interior that remains open to the neighborhood, forming an extension of the street, a space open to both residents and neighbors, integrating small shops and equipped with external furniture for public use.
